The Game of the Game

There’s this game that’s been around for… decades? Longer? Early Internet and maybe even in schoolyards and class rooms before then. It has one very simple rule for victory. “Don’t think about the game.” So, once you’ve started thinking about the game, you’ve lost. Seems both very simple and very insidious, like when someone tells you “Don’t think about an Elephant,” or “Don’t picture your grandparents naked.”

And that is my fundamental approach to improv, once you think about the game, you’ve lost. The nice thing about improv and theater games though is that losing and winning aren’t the only outcomes. There are tens if not tens of thousand of other outcomes depending on what the scenario or situation is.
